Winnetka Heights
Like Vickery Place in East Dallas, Winnetka Heights in Oak Cliff contains one of Dallas’ finest collections of Arts and Crafts Style homes. This Historic District is a neighborhood of approximately 600 homes is located in Oak Cliff barely two miles from Downtown Dallas. It is bounded by Davis to the north, 12th St to the south, Rosemont on the west and Wilomet on the east. The area was first developed in 1908, many of the homes there are now reaching their 100th anniversary making them eligible for the National Register.
The developers of Winnetka Heights included J.P. Blake, R.S. Waldron, T.S. Miller Jr. and Leslie Stemmons. They developed one of the first modern suburbs with sewer sytems, telephones, electricity, paved streets and curbs and building restrictions. The neighborhood was also accessible by streetcar making trips to downtown Dallas more convenient.
Although much of Winnetka Heights history has been lost to time, much still remains. R.S. Waldron’s craftsman style home located at Rosemont and Davis is now an apartment complex. T.S. Miller’s home is still standing on Montclair. J.P. Blake’s home is now known as the Turner house and is now home to the Oak Cliff Society of Fine Arts. The Turner house has become a gathering place for the neighborhood.
